Well
here it is our first article on personal success. This is one of
my favorite terms. What is personal success? Its definition is
defined by the user.
I am hoping to inspire women, real women not the TV and media
portrayal of women, but real everyday women trying to live our
lives and be the best that we can be. I am hoping to help them
to achieve their personal success. The reason I use the term
personal success is that my definition of personal success and
your definition of personal success are probably very different
and unique as they should be, everyone’s is.
Each week we will discuss the different tools that we need to
achieve our personal success, or at least our sanity.
Now to our title - It’s all about me….or at least it should be.
I am sure many of you will recognize yourself. One thing that I
had always been so proud about was I was home with my kids and
working from home, and how I sacrificed for my family. My
children wore fantastic clothes, but not me. My house was
spotless, my husband was happy and I worked from home late into
the night. I was exhausted, but I was happy right? Sure - I was
doing what I was supposed to do.
One day a friend of mine invited me out to get my nails done. I
thought, how can I do this? It’s so frivolous and I have a
thousand things to do at home. I believe that my friend sensed
my discomfort. She taught me a valuable lesson that day. She
told “Francine, you need to relax. You need to take time for
yourself. A happy you will make you a better Mom, wife,
Businesswoman, but most importantly it will make you a better
you.” We tend to lose ourselves in the many roles that we take
on as a woman.
“I will say I felt silly at first and I felt like I was wasting
my time, with so many projects waiting at home for me. But I
learned that yes, it’s wonderful to do things for yourself. That
was 6 years ago. I regularly get my nails done and love it. I
love to have someone taking care of me, I love to just relax. It
is my alone time. Sometimes my friends and I will get together
and get pedicures together and we are all the better for it.
What we need to realize is that it is not selfish to spend time
on yourself, to do something that you enjoy. It is necessary to
your mental health. It took me a long time to let go of trying
to be a mom, chauffer, wife, nurse, housekeeper, gardener, dog
walker, and the many other hats that all of us wear. Where did I
go? What about me? You will be a happy, healthier, more well
rounded person when you take care of yourself.
This is your homework for the week, find something you like to
do and take time to do that one thing for yourself. Don’t say
you can’t find the time. No one cares if the bathroom is
spotless or the dishes are in the sink.
So go do what you love, be it getting your nails done, going for
coffee with some friends. Curling up on the couch with your
favorite DVD or book. Get out and go for a walk, paint, shop,
whatever makes you happy. And don’t let the guilt monster get
you.
Be sure to post on our Inspirational pages and our Tips and
Tricks pages to share with other women that are in the same
position as you, and to gain strength from knowing that you are
not alone in all that you are trying to do.
Be unique, be yourself.
